In anesthetized rats, i.v. tetrandrine (T), 9 mg/kg, prevented the arrhythmia induced by i.v. BaCl2, 4 mg/kg, immediately or reverted the arrhythmia to a normal sinus rhythm. T, 6-9 mg/kg i.v., delayed the onset of arrhythmia induced by i.v. aconitine, 8 .mu.g/kg, from 2.4 .+-. (SD)1.2 to 4.0 .+-. 1.2 min. T, 9 mg/kg i.v., protected the rats from ventricular fibrillation and death induced by i.v. CaCl2, 120-130 mg/kg. In anesthetized guinea pigs with arrhythmias induced by i.v. ouabain, 100 .mu.g/kg every 2 min, T, 6 mg/kg i.v., shortened the duration of ventricular tachycardia from 18 .+-. 7 to 4.4 .+-. 2.2 min. T did not raise the electrical ventricular fibrillation threshold in anesthetized rabbits. Verapamil, 1 mg/kg i.v., did not delay the onset of aconitine-induced arrhythmia.
