Previous anatomical descriptions in men and functional studies on dogs offered evidence that most sympathetic fibers to the ventricle and the coronary arteries reach their destinations by passing between the aorta and the peripulmonary tissues. On the basis of this information, a selective ventricular sympathetic denervation in dogs was achieved by surgical transection of these fibers. This procedure proved to be safe and useful by itself or in conjunction with direct myocardial revascularization. It use in human angina pectoris and aorto-coronary artery bypass was discussed.
