The masticatory system in children with torticollis

In 120 children with congenital muscular torticollis, the orthopedic examination was supplemented with an investigation of the masticatory system. During the mandibular depression movement the distance between gingival margins of the maxilla and mandible is asymmetrical and smaller on the side of the torticollis. In older children with milk teeth, mixed teeth or permanent teeth, a significant asymmetry of the head and face was present, as well as scoliosis, posture deformity and occlusomaxillary anomalies which may result from disturbed functional equilibrium of the neck muscles. Three typical cases of muscular torticollis in children at different ages are described. The necessity for comprehensive orthopedic-orthodonic care of these children, is suggested.
