A 60-yr-old male patient was admitted with symptoms and signs of congestive heart failure with pericardial and pleural effusion. He was treated with medication initially, with some improvement in his condition, after which there was a steady downhill course until the patient expired about 2 mo. after admission. Investigations prior to death failed to reveal the diagnosis. At postmortem a large tumor measuring 12 .times. 8 cm, which was histologically diagnosed as MFH , was found in the pericardium at the root of the great vessels. It has spread by direct spread and by local metastasis. Previously reported cases of this tumor are reviewed; these emphasize the rarity of the pericardium as the primary site of MFH.
