Staged reconstruction of the pharynx and esophagus

The experience of 3 patients with a 2-stage reconstruction of the cervical esophagus is described after complete removal of the larynx, hypopharynx and cervical esophagus in cases with extended hypopharyngeal carcinoma. The 1st stage consists of laryngopharyngectomy with cervical esophagectomy with temporary closure, leaving 2 elective stomata, an esophagostomy and a hypopharyngostomy. A delayed cervicothoracic skin flap is developed at the end of the 1st stage. At the 2nd stage a skin-flap tube is constructed to bridge the gap between the 2 temporary stomata. The tube in turn is covered by the delayed cervicothoracic flap.
