Giardiasis among a party of high school pupils following a visit to Russia

Most of a party of 19 pupils and 3 teachers experienced abdominal pain and/or diarrhoea within 2 weeks of returning to Scotland from a visit to Moscow and Leningrad, USSR. Faecal examinations of all the party revealed 9 cases of giardiasis (3 of the cases were detected only after a 3rd examination). Metronidazole was an effective treatment, although in one case a 2nd course was necessary. Preventive measures are briefly discussed.
