Advantages and limitations of chemical preservatives for use in the radiochemical analysis of 131I in environmental milk samples

The following chemical inhibitors of binding of I ions to protein in milk were evaluated with regard to any potential interference with stable I measurements conducted by specific ion electrode methodology, relative ability to inhibit protein binding, and effect on overall performance of the routine radiochemical process: 0.5 M formaldehyde alone or with 100 mu M methimazole, 100 mu M NaHSO4, 100 mu M Na2S2O3, 100 mu M thiouracil, 100 or 370 mu M thimerosal. Best inhibition of binding to protein was obtained with methimazole.
