Pre-operative and post-operative changes in immunoglobulin levels in open heart surgery

Ig levels were determined in 30 patients undergoing open heart surgery and 25 apparently normal healthy individuals. All the 3 Ig showed significantly increased preoperative values as compared to the normal controls. In the postoperative period, IgG and IgA levels showed an initial decrease while IgM levels showed a continuous increase. At the end of the observation period the increase in IgM levels was highly significant (P < 0.001) compared to IgG (P < 0.05) and IgA (P < 0.01).
