Value of the eosinophil index for the diagnosis of allergic respiratory diseases

The eosinophil count in the blood from the auricle was determined in 78 patients with allergic diseases of the upper airways diagnosed on the basis of laryngological and allergological investigations. In 12 patients the eosinophil count was determined by the method of hemogram and in 66 the absolute number of eosinophils was calculated by the Thorn method. For each case the eosinophil index was subsequently calculated. Statistical analysis failed to demonstrate any significantly higher eosinophil count in the blood from the auricle in any method used. This index is without value for the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis.
