Mortality and morbidity rates are analyzed in 109 premature infants delivered after the preterm escape of amniotic fluid. The presence of clinically manifest infection of the maternal passages, uroinfection and other febrile conditions, particularly infections by gram-negative microorganisms, play a decisive role in the condition and prognosis of the newborn infant. The coincidence of infection in the mother with the escape of amniotic fluid > 48 h before delivery resulted in an increased mortality rate (292.7 .permill.) and morbidity rate (64.2%) for general infections. Indications are outlined for prophylactic antibiotic treatment of newborns with preterm escape of the amniotic fluid.
