The summation properties of the foveate part of the human retina were studied using various monochromatic stimuli. Absolute and difference thresholds of monochromatic and white stimuli were determined. The color mechanisms of the foveate part of the visual system have varying width of distribution of the lateral connections, ensuring spatial parameters of integration of the light signal. The blue mechanism possesses the most broadly distributed lateral connections; the red mechanism possesses the narrowest. Lateral retardation is inherent in each color mechanism. The retardation effect increases with an increase in the color brightness. Narrowing of the zone of incomplete summation with an increase in light brightness occurs more rapidly than narrowing of the zone of complete summation.
