During 1978, in hospital in Dublin, Ireland, subcutaneous measurements were made with the Holtain Skinfold Calipers within 48 h of birth on 1000 consecutive term infants of gestational age 37 weeks or more. From the results skinfold thickness centiles were produced for Irish newborn infants. Of the 1000 infants 98 were considered small for gestational age according to weight, being less than the 10th centile on the Aberdeen foetal growth chart (NAR 39, 5154), and of those, 59 had skinfold thickness less than the 3rd centile and 39 had normal values.
