The tracts arising from the substantia nigra are usually described as crossing the upper surface of the subthalamic nucleus and penetrating into the posterior leg of the internal capsule and thereafter into the pallidus, leaving fibers in the latter, in the putamen and the caudatus. The connections of the fibers reaching the thalamus are incompletely known so far. Some Golgi preparations of adult human mesencephala were useful in studying the proximal tract leaving the substantia nigra.
