Infection with Pasteurella multocida caused by cat bites is well known. Considerable numbers of birds 'rescued' from the mouths of cats are admitted to bird reception centres for treatment. The majority of birds caught by cats die. Mortality rates in four shelters were reported to be 30, 90, 99 and 100%. Of the birds rescued alive from the mouths of cats, about 40% died from the direct effects of the bites, and 60% died from Pasteurella multocida infection.
