Rehabilitation in chronic cerebral circulatory insufficiency

The results of rehabilitative measures aimed at insult prevention in patients with chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency of atherosclerotic origin are presented. Patients [163] were examined and divided according to disease severity and presence of neurological symptoms (compensated, remission and subcompensated stages). All patients were subjected to physical exercise (after determination of tolerance to physical loading) for improvement of balance, coordination, attention span, blood and lymph circulation and venous outflow from the brain. The stage-by-stage rehabilitation measures began with detection of high risk patients and their placement into specialized hospitals. In the 2nd stage the patients were transferred to a neurological inpatient clinic where a rehabilitation plan was elaborated and implemented for each patient (after a thorough in depth examination). The 3rd stage included a stay in a sanatorium where active and passive types of kinesitherapy, hydrotherapy and physiotherapeutic procedures were applied under sparing or training conditions with consideration of the state of the cardiovascular system, lipid metabolism and blood coagulation activity of the patients. Following the stage-by-stage treatment, considerable improvement was observed in 54 patients, moderate improvement in 93, insignificant improvement in 12 and no improvement in 4.
