Clinical, mammographic and fine-needle aspiration investigations were undertaken in 227 women with palpable masses in the breast. Malignancy or suspected malignancy was diagnosed by mammography in all cases but was missed clinically in 5 cases and in 8 of 18 cases by fine-needle aspiration. The poor cytological result was due to lack of experience on the part of some of the radiologists or to the fact that small carcinomatous tumors were missed by the fine-needle. Mammography appears to be superior to clinical examination.
