Observations on ascorbic acid content & cholesterol in male rat reproductive tissues

The ascorbic acid and cholesterol contents of the testis, prostate and seminal vesicles were measured in rats aged 3 to 18 wk. The ascorbic acid content of the testis was higher than that of the prostate and seminal vesicles, but in none of the organs was it significantly affected by age. The highest values were found in the testis at 10 wk (1290 plus or minus 50 mu g per testis), in the prostate at 8 wk (168 plus or minus 10 mu g), and in the seminal vesicles at 16 wk (75 plus or minus 5 mu g). The cholesterol content of each of the 3 organs fell with age, but the effect was not significant. Data were based on measurements on 5 males for each combination of age, organ and component.
