The dynamics of colon mucosa repair was followed in 235 patients with the typical form of acute dysentery. Use was made of histological examinations of biopsy specimens and determination of the histamine level in them. Unlike patients who were given only a pathogenetic therapy or its combination with furazolidone, patients who received a 5-7 day course of antibiotic therapy (with chloramphenicol or tetracycline) showed a delayed repair of the mucosa. The degree of the cytotoxic effect depended on the level of the antibiotics in the lumen of the intestine and in its mucosa.
