A report on twelve patients seen during a period of ten years, all of whom presented with retinal detachment limited by spontaneously developing "barriers" consisting of heavily pigmented or depigmented bands. The strength of these bands is discussed. On the basis of clinical experience they can only be considered stable in rare cases; the detachment usually progresses beyond them in time.
