Conventional x-ray examination of the chest (standard biplane radiograms, spot films, oesophagogram and tomogram) as a non-invasive method is of greatest value in the morphologic diagnosis of mediastinal disease. An important role plays the analysis of the pleuromediastinal lines and stripes which represent the interfaces of mediastinal structures and air containing lung tissue. A brief and systematic survey of their normal and pathologic roentgen anatomy is given and some characteristic examples are demonstrated.
