The effect of a 10% HES 200/0.5 solution on different rheological and clotting parameters was analyzed in 30 patients after hysterectomy and compared with those of a 10% dextran 40 solution. Both preparations have a similar volume effect and inhibit the intraoperative fall of the colloid osmotic pressure. In contrast to dextran, with its known hyperoncotic effect, the oncotic pressure remained after HES infusion in physiologically normal ranges. A moderate inhibition of the clotting system was observed after HES and after dextran infusion. This effect varied qualitatively with the plasma substitutes. The plasmatic clotting under dextran was markedly retarded, the platelet aggregation was more strongly inhibited after HES infusion.
