Comparative study of the fibrinolytic system in different species

The characteristics of the fibrinolytic system, activators and inhibitors, of several species commonly used at the laboratory and of humans were evaluated in vitro. The highest inhibitor content was found in rat and cat, and the lowest was found in dog. Basal and urokinase-induced fibrinolytic potential were low in cat. Rat plasma showed a high basal level and a great response to urokinase activation when its dose was sufficient to overcome inhibitors. Rabbit, dog and humans showed a great response to low dosage urokinase activation, partially due to its low inhibitor content. The rat appears to be a suitable animal for studying the fibrinolytic activation and especially the fibrinolytic inhibitors.
