Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis after carcinoma of colon: report of a successfully treated case

A case is reported in a 36-yr-old man, following colon resection for carcinoma, splenectomy, chronic ulcerative colitis and therapy with corticosteroids and 5-fluorouracil. Tissues from an open biopsy of the right lung revealed Aspergillus hyphae and a few clumps of acid-fast staining organisms without granulomata. Subsequently several sputum cultures grew A. fumigatus. Therapy with amphotericin B (total dose 3 g) was successful.
