Diagnostic value of puncture biopsy of the kidney (according to the data on 2000 biopsies)

An advantage of the half-open method of puncture biopsy of the kidney is demonstrated. This method enables one to repeat the biopsy whenever necessary. Nephrobiopsy is of a particular diagnostic significance in specifying the etiology of an isolated urinary syndrome, hematuria, or arterial hypertension of an obscure origin. Post-nephrocentesis complications of various kind arise in 29.2% of patients, more frequently in elderly ones, in the presence of arterial hypertension or hematuria, as well as in patients with glomerulonephritis. Repeated biopsies make it possible to evaluate the efficacy of the specific therapy of diffuse kidney affections and to detect the moment of possible transition of focal glomerulonephritis to the diffuse one.
