Adrenal insufficiency and iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome by cutaneous absorption of corticosteroids in an 8 month old infant

An infant had Leiner's dermatitis, for which it had been treated twice daily for 6 mo. with an ointment of betamethasone propionate. This prolonged therapy brought on an iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome, with bouts of renal insufficiency after what was probably a viral infection. The course of the illness is described. A persisting corticotropic insufficiency was diagnosed; after prolonged hydrocortisone treatment, hormone therapy had to be stopped, because of the child's Cushingoid appearance; these manifestations disappeared in 10 mo.
