The widespread use of IUDs has presented gynecologists with a variety of side effects and complications. Among these the major one is the dislocation of the device inside the uterine cavity, where it can often cause uterine perforation necessitating prompt diagnosis and removal. The authors describe in detail 4 such cases out of 44 investigated. A new and extremely important tool for the localization of displaced IUDs is echography, which has relegated radiologic methods and hysterography to a complementary function only. Echography gives precise results, it is easy to employ for the periodical examination of IUD wearers, it can lower the rate of IUD failure, and it is absolutely safe.
