Infective endocarditis associated with colorectal carcinoma

The association of colorectal carcinoma with infective endocarditis was recently reported. An additional case with this association is described. Colorectal carcinoma may serve as the port of entry for enteric bacteria into the circulation. An alternative explanation is the development of an opportunistic infection in the immunodepressed cancer patient. The practical implications are that fever of unknown etiology in a patient with colorectal carcinoma may be due to infective endocarditis and vice versa, a patient with Streptococcus bovis endocarditis should be investigated for possible colorectal carcinoma.
