Patterns of respiratory diseases in a general hospital in Addis Ababa

The patterns of respiratory disease admissions to Black Lion Hospital, a teaching hospital in Addis Ababa [Ethiopia], from Dec., 1975 to Nov., 1978, were analyzed. There were 399 admissions, with 56 deaths (14%). The 3 major diseases were pneumonias (142), tuberculosis (125) and bronchial asthma (50), comprising almost 80% of all respiratory disease admissions. Diagnosis and follow-up of the pulmonary tuberculosis were unsatisfactory. Etiology of the pneumonias was not known. There was no appreciable progress in the diagnostic facilites for respiratory diseases in Ethiopia in the last decade or 2. Even the existing facilities were not adequately utilized. Future studies cannot be meaningful in this field without the minimum appropriate facilities and trained manpower.
