Antigenic patterns of pre and post menopausal normal cervix

Antisera were raised in rabbits against pre- and post-menopausal cervical tissue extracts for comparative investigations on antigenic patterns using immunochemical and biochemical techniques. The pre-menopausal normal cervix exhibits more antigenic components than that of post-menopausal normal cervix in their respective homologous reactions indicating antigenic loss of some components of pre-menopausal cervix during the post-menopausal state. Cross-reaction studies reveal that pre- and post-menopausal cervix share both antigenic identity and cross-reacting components. The appearance of cross-reacting components on cervical tissue under different physiological status may be looked upon as an expression due to physiological difference. Gradual sex hormone diminution and increased aging process are likely to influence the normal cervical antigenic composition from pre- to post-menopausal state.
