S. abortis ovis strain Sao 15/5 injected in varying doses intragastrically into 8 ewes on day 76 of pregnancy caused abortion in one ewe which had been given the smallest dose. In another trial, 16 ewes were inoculated subcutaneously behind the left shoulder, between days 64-84 of pregnancy. Abortion occurred in 7 of 11 ewes that received between 2.5 X 107 and 1 X 1010 viable organisms. The reliability of the subcutaneous injection was tested on 9 ewes injected behind the left shoulder with 8 X 109 viable organisms on day 68 of pregnancy. Seven of the ewes aborted after a mean time of 22 days after inoculation. The results suggest that the subcutaneous route is more reliable in reproducing salmonella abortion for studying the disease, or for testing vaccines.
