The management of anaerobic infections (bacterial) comprises appropriate antimicrobial therapy aided by in vitro susceptibility test, surgical drainage or excision and general supportive measures. Since all anaerobes are sensitive to metronidazole and all other organisms are universally resistant to it, a zone of inhibition about the metronidazole disc indicates the presence of anaerobes. Anaerobic culture was done by using a Gas Pak BBL anaerobic jar system. Rapid presumptive identification of anaerobes in 50 cases was done by direct sensitivity test against metronidazole (5 .mu.g) and gentamicin (10 .mu.g) discs using clinical material. Anaerobes were isolated from 15 cases. All were sensitive to metronidazole (5 .mu.g) disc, suggestive of strict anaerobes. Ten specimens were sensitive to gentamicin (10 .mu.g) disc, indicating the presence of facultative growth.
