A thyrotoxic woman on 40 mg of propranolol daily for 10 days developed atrial and ventricular standstill after 2 warning episodes of sinus bradycardia and sinus arrest. A hypertensive woman on 160 mg of propranolol daily for 5 mo. developed fainting spells from sino-atrial block which disappeared after propranolol withdrawal and recurred after the drug was re-given by mistake 1 mo. later. Her hair gradually fell out until she was almost bald 4 mo. later. Her alopecia took about 2 mo. to improve, than she was re-tried on 200 mg of metoprolol daily for her unstable angina pectoris. After 3 days on metoprolol, she developed sinus arrest and hypotension which returned to normal after discontinuation of metoprolol. Her improving alopecia worsened again.
