Besides the sophisticated Doppler examination requiring a large and fairly expensive apparatus, it is possible to use a Doppler apparatus which is cheap, light, non-directional, has no recording device, and delivers only the sound signal; this is practical and easy to use, but its limitations must be strictly understood. This everyday Doppler apparatus can be used for the recognition of acute occlusions of the large deep venous trunks, as well as valvular incompetences, superficial and especially deep. It cannot be used for the recognition of well compensated occlusions, nor of partial obliteration of the large trunks or total obliteration of the small trunks; these diagnoses require the more sophisticated Doppler examination, but in these restricted cases it will often be better to carry out phlebography, which is a more reliable investigation in these limited conditions.
