Determination of total and separate blood levels of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA) in states of diverse severity of diabetes mellitus and during antidiabetic therapy

In 39 patients aged 16-60 yr suffering from diabetes of varying gravity (latent, mild and moderately grave) the total and separate levels of nucleic acids (RNA and DNA) in the blood were determined. Some peculiarities of the changes in the nucleic acid blood levels at different stages of the disease were revealed, these peculiarities being especially distinct when revealed by functional tests (oral test for glucose tolerance test for insulin-induced hypoglycemia). Diet therapy alone did not produce any noticeable effect on the level of the nucleic acids. Combination of the diet with sulfur drugs resulted in an increase in the RNA and DNA blood levels on an empty stomach, and in restoration of the normal character of the glucose tolerance curve. The influence of exogenous insulin was the most marked with regard to the DNA blood level.
