World-wide literature data on acquired immunity in leishmaniasis in relation to the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of the infection are analysed. The close relationships between clinical picture, pathogenesis and immunity and the variability of the clinical disease caused by the same species of parasite were confirmed by the study.
