A retrospective histopathological and statistical study of chronic thyroiditis and malignant thyroid tumors in thyroidectomy specimens received over 11 yr was conducted. Altogether 3494 thyroid specimens were received which on analysis showed 8.5% malignant tumors and 4.6% chronic thyroiditis. Among the thyroiditis cases, Hashiomoto's thyroiditis and lymphocytic thyroiditis together constituted 65.5%. Among the malignant tumors, papillary carcinoma comprised 66.7%. The incidence of carcinoma in Hashiomoto's and lymphocytic thyroiditis together was 1.9%. Papillary carcinoma was the commonest histological type associated with Hashiomoto's thyroiditis. Maximum incidence of chronic tyroiditis was seen in the 4th decade and that of malignant tumors in the 3rd decade. Chronic thyroiditis showed a striking female preponderence. The relationship between thyroid carcinoma and chronic thyroiditis and the histogenesis of thyroid carcinoma arising in Hashiomoto's thyroiditis are discussed.
