In yet another confirmation that middle age has invaded our home, my wife had her first screening mammogram a few days ago. Actually, she was surprised by the ease and painlessness of the whole process. The worst part, she said, was peeling the nipple markers off afterward. I told her I didn't realize they used nipple markers but was glad she got the test done anyway. That was Thursday, and today is Saturday. It's Labor Day weekend. I doubt that our local radiologists are spending the last weekend of summer reading mammograms. So we wait. We wait for the test results. But we aren't worried, mind you. We enjoyed a day of miniature golfing and dining out with my wife's family. I don't think my wife has given her mammogram a second thought. But as I pause this evening, I am aware that come Tuesday we could get a phone call that could change our lives.
