Reflections on the integration of treatment courses based on learning theory and dept psychology

An integrated therapy was applied in a woman with a pronounced pattern of anxiety by initially separating the neurotic actual conflict which was accessible via depth psychology, on the one hand, and the associated anxiety pattern on the other. Each of these was treated separately, the actualized basic conflict being approached via depth-psychology oriented therapy with formulated focus. The observable anxiety pattern, which had become largely independent of the basic conflict accessible via depth psychology and was preferably managed within the framework of a functional condition model, was treated via systematic desensitization. Repeated psychometric examinations confirmed changes in the behavior and self-assessment of the patient which was observed by the therapists as well. Now that 2.5 yr have elapsed since the patient was released from treatment, she is largely free from the signs and symptoms which had previously been governing her behavior. This study attempted to contribute to knowledge of a problem which has been tackled in German-language literature sporadically only in regard to its clinical aspects.
