Aphakic retinal detachment. High incidence of macular hole

Of 170 eyes with aphakic retinal detachment, 27 eyes (15.9%) had a macular hole. The incidence in females (22 of 67 eyes, 32.8%) was significantly higher than in males (5 of 103 eyes, 4.9%). The incidence was especially high after lens extraction due to senile cataract in females (40.5%). Age-matched general cases of retinal detachment were essentially identical. Common onset age of macular hole-type retinal detachment was not influenced by the causes for lens extraction, i.e., senile, traumatic or congenital cataracts or high myopia. The onset age was not related to the age at which the patient had a lens extraction. Age distribution and incidence of degenerative myopia showed no difference between aphakic and phakic groups of macular hole-type retinal detachment. Lens extraction apparently does not predispose an eye to macular hole-type retinal detachment.
