Symptoms simulating abdominal pathology in thyrotoxicosis

Five cases of hyperthyroidism are described in which symptoms suggestive of gastrointestinal disease prevailed in the clinical picture. The occurrence of these symptoms was analyzed in 116 patients with hyperthyroidism. This form of thyrotoxicosis was more frequent in males and was less frequently associated with exophthalmos. The most frequent symptoms and signs suggesting digestive tract disease included: weight loss (89%), loss of appetite (48%), increased appetite (41%), increased thirst (30%), diarrhea (28%) constipation (14%).
