Two hundred sixty-four bacterial and 9 yeast strains were isolated from cutaneous lesions of horses and cattle and from ophthalmic lesions of cattle. These strains were evaluated for sensitivity to 11 antimicrobial agents. All of the bacterial isolates were sensitive to cuprimyxin, 95% to gentamicin, 89% to neomycin, 83% to chloramphenicol, 81% to tetracycline, 70% to sulfadimethoxine, 65% to streptomycin, 60% to erythromycin, 59% to ampicillin, 53% to nitrofurantoin, and 23% to penicillin. All yeast isolates were sensitive to cuprimyxin. 0.5% cuprimyxin cream was used to treat skin lesions in 47 horses and 55 cattle, and 0.5% suspension for 307 bovine ophthalmic problems. Response was favourable in 92% of the horses, 100% of the cattle with skin lesions, and 97% of the cattle with eye disease.
