Microscopic study of human fallopian tubes after laparoscopic sterilization

Microscopic examinations of the Fallopain tubes were performed on patients who had undergone sterilization by unipolar electrocoagulation, bipolar electrocoagulation, application of a silicone ring, or application of the Hulka-Clemens clip. Studies were done one hour and one month after the operation. Unipolar electrocoagulation caused tubal cellular destruction and loss of ciliated cells up to 4 cm from the point of application. Bipolar electrocoagulation caused tubal cellular destruction 1 cm from the point of application, but the total deciliation of the tubal epithelium which was observed indicated a definitive decrease in tubal function. With the silicone ring, total destruction was observed along the 2.5 cm which the ring enclosed; stenosis due to hemodynamic changes was found up to 2 mm from the ring and partial deciliation up to 4 mm from the ring. The Hulka-Clemens clip caused tubal destruction only along .5 mm of the tube and partial deciliation up to 2 mm from the clip. Little difference was found between the studies done 1 hour and 1 month after sterilization.
