Human cases (29) of subdural hematoma were studied. The evaluation included the morphology of the capsule, its degree of organization in the relation to the age of hematoma, and changes in the texture providing indications as to the mechanism of the volume increase of hematoma. The material was examined histopathologically with routine staining methods. During development of the capsule, its collagen fibers and blood vessels undergo characteristic changes which allow determination of the age of hematoma. In the vicinity of some vessels, hemorrhagic foci are present in various stages of organization. The foci may be the cause of bleeding to the mass of hematoma which results in its volume increase. Acidophilic granulocytes were present in some of the capsules, indicating the allergic character of the reaction manifesting the response of the organism to the degradation products of blood extravasated into the subdural space.
