The plasma angiotensin II concentration (AT II) was determined in 117 cases of essential hypertension. The patients were categorized into: a low AT II hypertension group (LAH)/in 41.0% of the cases, a normal AT II hypertension group (NAH) in 52.1% and a high AT II hypertension group (HAH) in 6.8%. The LAH group appeared most often after the age of 50 and had a longer course of hypertension, while the NAH group was most often found in patients of younger age and with a shorter course. There was no marked difference in the level of blood pressure among the 3 subgroups. Cardiovascular complications occurred slightly more often in the LAH group than the NAH group. The 3 subgroups were nonhomogeneous, and there was limited validity in the use of renin-angiotensin profiles as a therapeutic guideline in essential hypertension.
