An embryological study of the ruminal mucosa was carried out at the stages from 3-9 mo. of fetal calf life. Histogenesis of the mucosa comprises 2 parts: one epithelial of endodermic origin and the other mesenchymatic. These 2 layers, interacting in a differentiation pattern, form the papillae. Some histochemical determinations of carbohydrates and nucleic acids were performed in all samples. Carbohydrates (glycans and glycosaminoglucuronoglycans) were related to papillar growth. Nucleic acids seem to have a more important histogenic role at final developmental stages.
