In the 1977-78 epidemic of influenza A in Leningrad [USSR], outpatients with influenza received remantadine alone or in combination with antigrippin. Administration of remantadine during the first 2 days from the onset of influenza symptoms in a dose 50 mg 3 times a day in combination with antigrippin made it possible to reduce the duration of temporary disablement in uncomplicated cases. The number of complications decreased from 24-4%; that of acute viral-bacterial pneumonias dropped 8 times as low as that observed in the conventional therapy with common antinfluenzal drugs.
