Cervical mass as presenting symptom in subclavian vein thrombosis

A patient with spontaneous, idiopathic thrombosis of the subclavian vein had an unusual clinical picture. The presenting symptom was a hard, fixed mass in the neck, suspected of being a tumor and the cause of the thrombosis. Excisional biopsy revealed the mass to be a thrombosed vein. After the excision and anticoagulant treatment the patient recovered.
