A retrospective analysis of 400 angiographic examinations demonstrated vertebral erosions associated with vertebral artery tortuosity in 7.5%. The condition showed increased incidence with age, but there was a significant proportion in the younger age groups. Statistically, there was no relationship to the presence of atheroma or hypertension; sex incidence was equal. The 4th cervical vertebra is the one most commonly affected. A theory is advanced suggesting a basically congenital etiology, but the incidence is affected by acquired factors.
