Measurements of the angles of directional hearing acuity in males and females with normal hearing

Changes in the values of the angles of directional hearing acuity were studied in 351 healthy subjects relating the results to sex, age and azimuth. The measurements were done by the method of Zakrzewski in free acoustic field. Healthy subjects aged 15-80 yr were selected after 3 screening examinations: history data, objective examination and audiometry. In the 1st part of the study an analysis of the mean values of these angles was done in males and females. In 55.4% of 56 studied groups auditory localization was found to be worse in females than in males. In 37.5% the males had higher values of directional hearing. In the remaining 7.1% these values were equal. The differences were analyzed statistically and were found to be significant in only 2 age groups. This is accepted as a basis for joint examination of males and females in 1 group in further studies on changes of the angles of directional hearing acuity in normally hearing subjects.
