A comparative study of anterior and posterior scans of the thyroid in nodular goitres

Thyroid gland diagnostic information is usually based on anterior scan view alone; a comparative study was undertaken on 131I thyroid scans between the anterior and posterior scans in nodular goiter performed with a medium focus collimator of a numerical scanner. The thyroid is a thin and superficial organ, but the posterior scans were different from the anterior view in nodular goiter contrary to popular belief and documented literature. Predictions made on the tomographic capabilities of the scintiscanner, based on the current study on depth response of its collimators, were confirmed.
